GREENTEA PENG GHOST TOWN

The South Londoner Greentea Peng is back with a delightfully dubby new single. Inspired by reggae artists that she was raised on like Finley Quaye (and The Specials?) 'Ghost Town' is Greentea's nod to alienation and disaffection. The bass is thick and heavy, drums and vocals drenched in reverb and echo, giving the tune that spacey Lee Scratch Perry style. The guitar plays a down stroke on the off-beat, supplying optimism and musical lift. Greentea challenges the nature and effects of London life, and of course...the dreary weather: "London Bridge is fallin' down, all my mates walkin' 'round with frowns, can't seem to make no sense of all this rain, with your rules and regulations, why you so stiff?" But it's not all doom and gloom. Greentea seems to have a soft spot for the city in chorus line but you can't take my city from me, suggesting a love-hate relationship with London, with which I'm sure most Londoners can sympathise. The stripped-back section towards the end of the song feels like returning home from being outside in the rain - decorated with glorious group harmonies, warming saxophones and a hearty vocal melody from Greentea. With it's sunshiney vibes, 'Ghost Town' is sure to get you through the last little stretch of the winter blues. -Ellie Rose-Davies
